Monday, 20 August 2012 (Lee's AM class)

Hello, everyone, Lee's not in today but here's what he's planned for you today.

When you finish the test, please SHARE it with Lee.

Then go over the Unit Seven Enjoyment Reading from last week. We'll go through the answers to the questions as a class. If you haven’t finished reading it and / or doing the questions, do that once you are finished with the test, even if the rest of us are going over the answers.

Once everyone has finished doing the Enjoyment Reading discussion, write your answers to ALL of the questions and then share your documents with Lee.

If we still have time after we finish the song, start (or finish) the Short Reading that’s for homework or do this Prepositions activity from Unit Seven in Lee's blog:

Next week's Presentation:  Famous (Canadian) Business People:  Some websites:
     Famous Canadian Entrepreneurs
     Well Known Canadians
     List of Canadians - Wikipedia
     Top 40 Under 40
You may prefer to do a presentation on a non-Canadian.  This is also acceptable.  For each person presented, be sure to use W5H:  who, where, what, when, why, and how.  Who are they?  Where are they from / where did they do something outstanding? What did they do? When did they do it? Why did they do it?  How did they do it?  Include any interesting quotes from this person, and also indicate what impact they have had in their business/industry/company/country/ etc.

Below is a textbook, titled Business Vocabulary in Use, that you can use at your leisure.
Business Vocabulary in Use
But we will also start doing lessons in class, according to the weekly theme.  Another book that might be useful for you is Business Phrasal Verbs and Collocations.  We can start using lessons from this text, as well, if you like.

Please take a look at last week's blog regarding the Career Exploration Fair at Douglas College.  We're all going to Douglas College next Monday, March 5, 2012, for a real job fair.  There are videos for you to view.

Note:  If you do not wish to participate in the job fair AS A CLASS, we don't have to go.  But I think it would be good experience for you.

Company research
Company research vocabulary

For your presentation on Monday, 27 February, your assignment is to research a Vancouver-based company.  The presentation should use Prezi or PowerPoint.

Start by using the "Interview Preparation Checklist".  This is a guideline to help you focus your research.  FYI, "STAR" is an acronym for:
S - Situation, background; set the scene
T - Task or Target: specifics of what's required;
      when; where; who
A - Action: what you did, skills used, behaviours,
      characteristics
R - Result: Outcome; what happened

You are not expected to use each item on the form, and you can add information that you feel is required for you.  Also, you may not have the slightest interest in working in Vancouver, or for the company you choose, but everyone can learn something from their research.
